mYphone Dilemma!

Filed under: tech — admin @ 10:01 am

I’m due a new phone.  When I say this, understand my current phone works perfectly fine but as a self proclaimed technologist it’s embarrassing for me to be walking around with two year old technology.  This of course is an amazingly stupid way to look at things (not to mention hyper materialistic) but sometimes, I ain’t so smart.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, the iPhone seems to be reigning supreme and I am not going to lie, I have serious techno lust every time I think about the sleek, sexy, warm to the touch… oh wait.  *ahem* From the first time my fingertips slid across it’s glassy surface I was done for.  Unfortunately, like an older brother that really, really doesn’t want you to date his sister and who has repeatedly told you to go away, over the iPhone looms AT&T.

I hate AT&T.  One, because I grew up in a time when the media and public opinion painted AT&T to be as nefarious as any of the worlds greatest threats at the time.  Two, because it was with AT&T that I ran up my first bill that I could not pay to the sum of something like $800.00 in one month.  The second was my fault but like the one that just jilted a lover I am still able to find a way to justify myself.

When it comes down to it though, I have been with Sprint for a very long time and because of this, I have a grandfathered plan that suits me very well.  I am able to Bluetooth tether my laptop, very decent EVDO speeds and for the most part have been satisfied.  Don’t get me wrong I have my gripes about Sprint, but it is what it is.  Sprint recently announced a new phone that looks pretty interesting, the Samsung Instinct.  It’s basically a touch screen phone that “borrows” a lot of it’s design from the iPhone.  It’s not an iPhone though and to be honest it seems to be kind of a mockery more than a homage.  What the Instinct would allow me to do though is have a somewhat cool phone and keep my plan with Sprint (did I mention I am NOT in a contract ask me how I managed that!) and once again elude my arch nemesis AT&T.

Here is the problem.  I found out yesterday to get the Instinct I must move to the new Simply Everything Plan which looks decent at $99 until you find out to use the phone as modem costs another $40!  So for $139 (before taxes and fees I am sure) I am getting a less than an awesome phone at essentially the same service plan cost of the iPhone!

Some days I just want to ditch it all and go VoIP all the way.  I mean I grew up in a day before cell phones and voicemail.  It is really that important that you can speak to me at any moment of the day?  Alas just as the barfly says, “one last one and then I quit”… I’ll end up with something but the question is WHAT?

Then again gPhone (android) is around the corner….

Glad you made it, get yourself some coffee and make yourself at home… okay technically there isn’t enough here to be all that intriguing as of yet… honestly there may never be but it’s worth a try.

Just a few notes:

The banner is my 1961 Volkswagen Karman Ghia.  It’s been my project for the last 3 years.

I am on the job market.  Know of a good position?  Like the place you work so much you think, damn I wish more cool people worked here.  Let me know.

I really enjoy meeting interesting people and having sarcastic, witty conversations.
